Chronology

In the disastrous bombing of Darmstadt on 11th September 1944, which razed more than half of the city to the ground, also the Wedding Tower was severely hit and burned out. For years, rain water had been intruding into the tower’s interior and caused considerable damage. It was only in the early 1950s that the steel construction in the tower top was repaired with the help of a primitive wooden scaffolding. In November 1953, the copper sheeting of the “fingers” could be replaced. From then on, all works had been minimized to merely aesthetic repairs and the tower had been left more or less to itself.
