"Have reverence for the old and courage to try something new." With this motto, the Wedding Tower Promotion Society would like to continue the tradition of Darmstadt citizens, who built the tower to commemorate "their" Grand Duke’s second wedding.
The Wedding Tower Promotion Society was founded in 1982 as a registered foundation with the objective of ensuring the conservation and revitalisation of the Darmstadt landmark and European monument. Together with the City of Darmstadt and through donations and revenue from various activities, many measures were funded to make the tower a special attraction once again. In a license agreement with the City, the public operation of the Tower was handed over to the charity.
Since 1986 the Society curates the public spaces of the Tower, including the lift, sells souvenirs and makes the Wedding Room on the 5th floor available for civil ceremonies. The Wedding Tower records 40-50,000 visitors a year.
In 1989, the Society received the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s Silver Medal for their exemplary work. In 1999, the Society covered the costs for the restoration of the mechanical clock tower on the north side, and other expenses. Additional duties include the preservation and care of the plane tree grove, as well as the renovation of the exterior facade.
